Happy Columbus Day 2017!
At the center of Columbus Circle in Washington, DC, sits a tribute to Christopher Columbus after whom the the District is named. Titled "Columbus Fountain," the work of art was crafted by American sculptor Lorado Taft. The front bears a full-length portrait of Columbus staring forward and beneath him a ship prow that features a winged figurehead representing the observation of discovery. A globe, representing the Western hemisphere, is on top of the shaft behind Columbus with four eagles on each corner connected by garland. The left and right sides of the shaft have two male figures. The eastern (right) side figure seen here is an elderly man, representing the Old World, and on the north (left) side (obscured in this photograph) is a figure of a Native American, representing the New World.
Union Station may be seen to the north behind the sculpture.
