At the American Academy in Rome, Paul Howard Manship derived his inspiration from ancinet art. The use of receptive patterns in hair and fur and of enameled eyes helped to place his work in the forefront of American sculpture. "Actaeon" and his companion "Diana," located at the far end of the same walk at Brookgreen Gardens, depict the myth of the unfortunate hunter who surprised Diana as she bathed in a woodland pool. Enraged, Diana turned him into a stag and he was killed by his own hounds.
