Today I head out to San Antonio, Texas, for my third concurrent Imaging USA, the annual conference sponsored and run by the Professional Photographers of America.
And as I do so I'll be sporting this terrific polo made my good friend, U.S. Navy shipmate, and fellow entrepreneur Phil Roos. I'm proud to claim I'm the first customer of his new custom embroidery company SailorFish Embroidery and Design . . . which is a clever name based on the answer he's so often given to people asking him, "So what are you going to do when you retire?" Now, he's made good on that.
Phil and I served together on the Carrier Strike Group SEVEN staff which was also known as the admiral's staff for the RONALD REAGAN Strike Group. Phil was the N3 or Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations while I was the N21 or Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence. Today Phil is a Navy Captain inside of the his last year in the Navy. He's commanding the Navy ROTC Unit at Arizona State University (after doing so at Rutgers University, and UC Berkley) and he's transitioning with one foot in his new business, preparing to make it his full-time job.
As a fellow creative I was very intrigued learning about all that is involved in taking a graphic (e.g. a logo like mine) and converting that to something physical with thread. You'd think it's pretty basic, until you really think about it, and examine all of the tweaks that need to be made for size of design, thread count and sturdiness of the material the shirt is made of, I could go on and on. And I get it. Lots of people think making a great photograph is just about clicking a button "on a really good camera." . . . yeah.
So I'm glad to have my first custom made shirt and I'll be ordering more in the near future. If you'd like to give your business greater exposure too, please let my buddy Phil help you out in his veteran-owned business. No job is too large or small!
